APPRENTICESHIP

Description of Trade: Insulation workers insulate buildings to reduce energy consumption by keeping heat in during the winter and heat out during the summer.

General Requirements: Applicant must be 18 years of age. Provide a birth certificate, high school diploma or GED. Must have valid driver’s license at time of application.. Must be able to pass a drug test. Applicants are not required to have taken specific high school courses; however, courses in woodworking, mechanical drawing, algebra, geometry, and general science will all provide a strong educational foundation for insulation work.

Jurisdiction: Local 18 has jurisdiction in 32 centrally located counties in Indiana and 5 counties in Illinois (Champaign, Clark, Douglas, Edgar, and Vermillion).

Application Process: Applications are taken year round at insulators18.org or in person at 1220 E Epler Ave, Indianapolis, IN 46227.  

Apprentice Training: Training consists of four years and will be held on Saturdays. Various types of training will be offered to first, second, third and fourth-year apprentices. Classes usually run July-May.

Wages: Wages start at $16/hr and top out currently at $33.90/hr, along with medical, optical, dental, 2 retirements, and an HRA account.

Potential Careers in this Trade: After 4 years, apprentice training is complete and the graduate receives an associates degree in applied sciences from Ivy Tech.
