APPRENTICESHIP

Description of Trade: To protect buildings and their contents, roofers repair and install roofs made of tar or asphalt, gravel, rubber, thermoplastic and metal. Roofers work on both commercial and residential buildings. Roofers also may waterproof foundation walls and floors. There are two types of roofs, flat and pitched (sloped). Most commercial, industrial and apartment buildings have flat or slightly sloping roofs. Most houses have pitched roofs. Some roofers work on both types, while others specialize.

General Requirements: High School Diploma or GED, 18 or older, Good Physical Condition, Must pass drug test at time of selection as an apprentice, Valid Driver’s License

Jurisdiction: Champaign, Coles, Clark, Cumberland, Clay, Edgar, Douglas, Vermillion, Fayette, Shelby, Richland, Piatt, Effingham, Macon, and Moultrie counties, and eastern half of Christian, southern half of Dewitt, southern portion of Iroquois, and Ford county south of Piper City.

Application Process: Accepting applications for apprenticeship program year round. Applicants must apply in person any Monday 8 to 3:30 p.m. at 3301 Boardwalk Drive, Champaign, IL.

Apprentice Training: Roofing apprenticeships generally last 4 years.

Wages: Hourly rate is $21.60-$39.00 per hour.
