Description of Trade: To protect buildings and their contents, roofers repair and install roofs made of tar or asphalt, gravel, rubber, thermoplastic and metal. Roofers work on both commercial and residential buildings. Roofers also may waterproof foundation walls and floors. There are two types of roofs, flat and pitched (sloped). Most commercial, industrial and apartment buildings have flat or slightly sloping roofs. Most houses have pitched roofs. Some roofers work on both types, while others specialize.

General Requirements: Applicants must be 18 years of age or older. A High School Diploma or GED is not required. We do not require a drug test or a valid driver’s license to apply. However, apprentices are expected to arrive to work on time each day and maintain reliable attendance.

Jurisdiction: Champaign, Coles, Clark, Cumberland, Clay, Edgar, Douglas, Vermillion, Fayette, Shelby, Richland, Piatt, Effingham, Macon, and Moultrie counties, and eastern half of Christian, southern half of Dewitt, southern portion of Iroquois, and Ford county south of Piper City.

Apprentice Training: Roofing apprenticeships generally last 4 years.

Wages: Hourly rate is $22.93-$41.21 per hour.
